HOW DO WE SHARE GOD’S HEART FOR THE LOST?

An image of a cross

Scripture clearly shows us that God’s heart is to reach the lost. And He has charged every believer to fulfil this commission.  Matthew 28:18-20 says, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  But how do we share God’s heart for the lost?

WE NEED TO DIE TO OURSELVES

The apostle Paul’s ministry to the lost truly stands out in the Bible.  He was absolutely consumed with reaching the lost.  As a result, his ministry bore incredible fruit.  I think many of us as believers want to make an impact for the Kingdom of God. We long to bear fruit just like Paul did.  But this came at a cost for the apostle Paul. And he willingly paid the price for this to happen.  His ministry was so fruitful because of one reason – He died to himself completely. And he did so every single day.  We see this in Galatians 2:20 which says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

We need to clearly understand that we can’t drum up within ourselves a passion to reach the lost.  We have to die to ourselves on a daily basis just like Paul did.  This echoes what Jesus said in Matthew 16: 24-26 which says, “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

So that’s the encouragement to each of us today.  There are 3 things each one of us can do to help fan aflame a passion to reach the lost:

  • Die to ourselves daily
  • Grow deeper in our relationship with God daily
  • Prayerfully ask God to help us fan aflame a passion to reach the lost

Now we know how to share God’s heart for the lost. So let’s pursue these things diligently and make them part of our life. And God by His Spirit will set our hearts ablaze with His passion for the lost.
