The Wisdom and Lyrical Books — Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon — form the poetic heart of the Old Testament. Unlike historical narrative, these books use the genres of poetry and wisdom literature, and must be read accordingly.

📌 Job

Wrestles with the question of suffering and God’s sovereignty, showing that God is trustworthy even when His ways are beyond our understanding.

📌 Psalms

A collection of 150 songs and prayers expressing the full range of human emotion before God — praise, lament, thanksgiving, and trust — and rich with prophecies of the Messiah.

📌 Proverbs

Practical wisdom for daily living, teaching that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

📌 Ecclesiastes

Explores the meaning of life “under the sun,” concluding that life apart from God is fleeting, and that we are to fear God and keep His commandments.

📌 Song of Solomon

A poetic celebration of love and marriage, often read as a picture of the love between God and His people, and between Christ and the church.

🔴 The Scarlet Thread of Redemption — Jesus Revealed in the Wisdom & Lyrical Books

These books point to Jesus as the wisdom of God, the fulfillment of the Psalms’ messianic hope, and the Bridegroom who loves His people.

📌 Jesus, the Wisdom of God

Christ is “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24), the one in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden (Colossians 2:3).

📌 The Messiah of the Psalms

The Psalms are filled with prophecies fulfilled in Jesus — His suffering (Psalm 22), His resurrection (Psalm 16), and His eternal reign (Psalm 110).

📚 Key Scripture

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” — Proverbs 9:10
