Redemption is one of the foundational truths of our faith. And what an incredible truth it is! To think that we were once lost in darkness as slaves to sin. But because of Jesus and what He did for us on the cross, we are no longer slaves to sin!
Romans 6:17-18 says, “But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
A NEW IDENTITY
What an incredible verse this is! Before Christ set us free, we were under sin’s dominion and control. But because Jesus has now redeemed us, He literally broke the power of sin over us. As a result, sin is no longer our master. We are now slaves to righteousness.
So while sin can still tempt and influence us, it’s not our master anymore. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can and should resist sin and walk in God’s ways.
The most important thing for each believer to remember daily is that when Jesus redeemed us, He also gave us a new identity. That identity is that we are now slaves of righteousness. We don’t need to answer sin’s call. We need to walk daily in this identity.
This doesn’t mean that we will never sin. What it does mean is that when we come to tempting situations the Holy Spirit’s is there to help us resist sin. Always remember that this is a war that we are in. Our flesh and spirit are at war with each other and we have an active part to play. We need to choose daily to turn away from sin and towards Jesus.
Let’s lean hard into the presence of the Holy Spirit and His power as He helps us walk in victory!
