We live in a world now where many people live in rebellion against God. Sin abounds and so many people’s hearts are turned away from God. When we get to the heart of the matter we can see that people, even some Christians, have lost their fear of God. Yet, the Bible tells us that the fear of God is the start of all wisdom. Let’s look now at the fear of God.
Proverbs 9:10 says,
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
We hear so much about God being loving, kind, gracious, forgiving and slow to anger. And yes, He absolutely is all these things. Sometimes, though we can get so focused on these things that we lose sight of the fact that God is incredibly powerful, He hates sin and we need to keep an incredible reverence and respect for Him. This reverence and awe of God should motivate us to live lives that please Him and to repent when we fall into sin.
Remember that when we talk of the fear of God we’re not saying we should be afraid of God. Instead, the Bible is telling us to have a deep reverence and respect for God.
So this is an encouragement to each one of us as believers to live lives that honour God. We need to honour and respect Him because of all that He has done for us. Let’s always carry a very deep reverence and respect for God that is reflected in how we treat others and conduct ourselves.
Let’s give God the reverence and respect He so richly deserves and bring honour to His name.
