🔴 The Scarlet Thread of Redemption — Jesus Revealed in Genesis 1–11

📌 The Proto-Evangelium — Genesis 3:15

This is the first gospel announcement in all of Scripture. After the fall, God pronounces judgment on the serpent: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

The “offspring/seed of the woman” points directly to Jesus Christ. The bruised heel refers to Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross. The crushed head refers to the total defeat of Satan — fulfilled ultimately at the cross (Colossians 2:15) and consummated in Revelation 20:10. This is a lifeline for all of humanity.

📌 God the Son — Creator

Genesis 1:26 records: “Let us make man in our image”. The plural points to the Trinity. Colossians 1:16 confirms: “By him all things were created.” Jesus, God the Son, was the Creator of everything.

📌 Noah’s Ark — A Type of Salvation

The ark that saved Noah and his family from the flood is a picture of salvation. Just as those inside the ark were saved from God’s judgment on sin, those who are “in Christ” are saved from the judgment of God on sin (1 Peter 3:20-21).

📌 The Genealogy from Shem to Abram

Genesis 11:10-32 traces the lineage from Shem to Abram (Abraham), through whom the promised Seed — Jesus — will eventually come. Luke 3:23-38 traces Jesus’ genealogy all the way back through this line to Adam and to God Himself.

📚 Key Scripture

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” — Genesis 3:15

📝 Study Questions

  1. Genesis 1:1 answers four fundamental questions. What are they? How does God’s act of creation reveal His power, purpose, and character?
  2. How does the fall of humanity in Genesis 3 affect your understanding of the world around you — relationships, suffering, and the need for redemption?
  3. God created humanity in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). What are the implications of treating every person you meet as someone made in the image of God?
  4. Genesis 3:15 is called the “proto-evangelium” (first gospel). How does this first promise of a Redeemer set the tone for the entire Bible? How does it find its fulfilment in Jesus?
