As we celebrate Valentine’s Day today what could be more relevant than talking about love? When it comes to love there are different types of love. Romantic love is very precious and to be cherished and celebrated however today we’re going to look at our love for God and others. Mark 12: 30-31 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Loving God and loving others are central pillars of our faith. And they are commandments that we need to obey. But did you know that you show your love for God by loving others?
Hebrews 6:10 says, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” I was struck to the core when I recently read this verse during my quiet time. It emphasised to me that when we help people and love and serve them in practical ways, we show our love to God.
LOVE IS A VERB
Sometimes, it’s so easy to get caught up in thinking that we love God because we raise our hands and worship in church during a service. This is certainly one way to express our love but remember it cannot stop there. We need to express our love for God with action. Remember that love is always a verb. We show our love through what we do.
So remember, the next time you see someone struggling help them however you can. Sometimes this may mean that you undertake to pray for them if you’re unable to help with their practical needs. And other times it will mean helping in a practical way to meet their needs. Whichever way let’s keep our hearts positioned to help others however we can because ultimately this is how we express our love to God.
