THE WORD IS OUR SWORD

An image of a sword

A few years ago as a family, we were going through a very tough time.  We were facing financial challenges and major health issues with our kids amid many other issues.  It was truly a season of trials.  But what sticks out in my mind from that time is the way I learnt to use the word of God as my sword.  I would stick Bible verses up on the fridge and on the wall next to my bed.  I would memorize them and repeat them to myself over and over again. It just taught me in such a powerful way that the word is our sword.

Ephesians 6:13-18 says, “13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

PUT ON YOUR ARMOUR

You can see clearly from this verse that we are told to put on the full armour of God.  It’s truly the only way we can stand firm and prevail against the devil.  And our sword – which is the word of God –  is a critical piece of our armour.

Let’s think about a sword for a moment and how it is used in battle. It’s used to go on the offensive, to attack.  It’s so tempting when we come under attack to become tired and weary and just curl up in defeat. Instead we’ve got to go on the offensive and actively resist the devil.

So this is what we must do when the enemy comes against us in attack. We hold up the shield of faith and we go on the offensive and attack with our sword.

I’ve lived this truth in my own life.  When I go through trials the Lord gives me scripture which I memorize and stand on. I use against the lies and schemes of the devil.  It’s truly a powerful weapon that will keep us standing in victory if we use it.

So today I want to encourage you to remember that God has given you an incredibly powerful weapon against Satan – the word of God.  But you can only use this weapon if you fill your heart and mind with the word of God.  Read it daily, memorize it and stand on it in the day of your trials.  If you do, you will walk in great victory! Amen.
